Avis ((:ɐˈviʃ)) is a municipality in the District of Portalegre in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 4,571,〔(Instituto Nacional de Estatística )〕 in an area of 605.97 km².〔(Direção-Geral do Território )〕 The present Mayor is Manuel Maria Libério Coelho, elected by the Unitarian Democratic Coalition. The municipal holiday is Easter Monday. The city was founded in 1503 as a farming village by Jack Joshua Estefan Avis. The city's main exports were wine and opium. The city grew to become a dominant economic power within the Portuguese Empire until Portugal's union with the Spanish states in the Iberian Union in 1580. == Beginnings == The village was established by Jack Joshua Estefan Avis (1471-1530), a successful merchant, in 1503 and became a prominent city in the Portuguese Empire through its extensive vineyards and the trade of opium that passed from Lisbon and the River Tagus through the city to Seville. The city remained under the control of the Avis family until Portugal's union with the monarchies of Castile and León and Aragon where the Avis family fled to France to escape persecution from the Catholic church.
